In this class, we talk about different techniques that help us make adjustments in the audition room quickly and with impact. I started teaching this class because I was tired of not using my gift. I know that I'm an actor -- I've always known that. But in between acting gigs, I was frustrated that my gifts were not being used. So I thought that sharing them with others would be a great way to share what I've been given. I am in no way saying this as if I am superior to any of the amazing actors I'm working with; simply that everyone has a different set of skills and the things I've been able to share have been able to help others learn things they hadn't yet been exposed to in their training. And it feels GOOD!

After the first class, one of the students went all the way to the final producer's session for a TV show and got excellent feedback from casting. After the second class, a student booked a national commercial specifically using the technique he'd learned the night before. This type of instant incorporation of the tools we've been discussing is not only rewarding to the students, but also to me.

That's my message to you all today. Sharing your gift with others is truly an amazing experience. Too often, actors are scared to share information or techniques with others because they view them as competitors. But NO ONE can take a job from you that's not already yours. We're all destined for greatness in our own ways, so don't be selfish with your gifts. Share them with others and watch how much you'll get back! Teach someone to play the guitar, share an acting technique or show someone that recipe that you know so well. You'll be glad you did.

Brilliant Acting Advice

An actor friend shared this on Facebook, I thought I'd share it with you all. Even "working" actors aren't working.

So I was told today that out of the 489 people who were hired for pilots as series regulars this season, 24 were minorities and 8 were women of color. SHeeSH. What odds! Even if that number is off (I think it sounds low), it's pretty wild.

Here is a transcript of the report published by Premier Talent Group on March 21, 2010. FASCINATING STUFF!

2010 Pilot Season – The “NAME” GAME RULES

As Marc Hirschfield recently said in the Hollywood Reporter, “I think this is probably the most competitive pilot season in about eight years ....” (HR, March 9, 2010). There are fundamentally three reasons for this being one of the most competitive pilot seasons on record:

Market Competition I: Film Stars Flock to Pilots
Market Competition II: Limited Number of Projects
Market Competition III: Complications of “Second Positioning” on Pilots

MARKET COMPETITION I:
TOP LEADING MEN/WOMEN OF FILM – TV DOING 2010 PILOTS
The 2010 Pilot Season has been marked by yet another strong paradigm shift in the industry. coming over to Pilot TV in droves. Dustin Hoffman (who hasn’t done TV since 1967) is just one of many FILM stars or film’s leading men/women who have found their way over to Pilots. Here is a non‐comprehensive list of a few who have:

Dustin Hoffman (Luck) Jon Voight (Midlands) Forrest Whitaker (Criminal Minds II) Beau Bridges (Rockford Files) William Shatner (Shit My Parent’s Say) Eugene Levy (Hitched) Mary Steenburgen (Southern Discomfort) Donnie Wahlberg (Burgess/Green) Brittany Snow (Kindreds) Charles Dutton (Uncle Nigel) Brian Keith (Midlands) Scott Caan (Hawaii Five‐O) Robert Patrick (Edgar Floats) Dennis Farina (Luck) Adam Arkin (Who Gets the Parents) Jason Ritter (The Event) Swoosie Kurtz (Mike and Molly) Neal McDonough (Scoundrels) Bill Pullman (Nathan vs. Nurture) Ashley Tisdale (Hellcats)
Dermot Mulroney (Rockford Files) Claire Forlani (Episodes) Sam Shepard (Tough Trade) Tom Selleck (Reagan’s Law)
Nick Nolte (Luck) Virginia Madsen (Scoundrels) Treat Williams (Boston’s Finest) Keri Russell (Wilde Kingdom) Kathy Bates (Kindreds) Stephen Rea (Chaos) Janeane Garofalo (John Wells Untitled) Rob Morrow (Truth) Jason Biggs (True Love) Brian Dennehey (Criminal Minds II) Zeljko Ivanek (The Event) Ben Chaplin (Kindreds) Carey Elwes (Tough Trade) Lea Thompson (Uncle Nigel) Gary Cole (Uncle Nigel) Damon Wayans (Happy Endings)

That coupled with the sheer volume of NAMED TV actors who also are signing up for Pilots increases the competition even further for non‐NAMED actors. Here again is a NON‐COMPREHENSIVE listing of established TV leading men/women who have signed on with Pilots:

Micheal Chiklis (No Ordinary Family) James Belushi (Defenders) Leah Remini (Defenders, Takes a Village) Sarah Chalke (The Freshman) Matt LeBlanc (Episodes) Blair Underwood (The Event) Jane Kaczmarark (Who Gets the Parents) Jerry O’ Connell (Defenders/Rex is not your... ) Allyssa Milano (Hall Pass) Dylan Walsh (ATF) Ana Ortiz (True Blue) Eric Close (Chaos) Poppy Montgomery (True Blue) Elisha Cuthbert (Happy Endings) Kellie Giddish (Chase) Laura Prepon (Awkward Situations for Men) Becki Newton (Love Bites) Will Arnett (Untitled Mitch Hurwitz) Jere Burns (Strange Brew) Christina Applegate (Hall Pass) Molly Parker (Quinn‐Tuplets) Rob Morrow (The Whole Truth)
Debra Messing (Wright vs. Wrong) John Schneider (Back Nine) Jimmy Smits (Wilde Kingdom) Kristin Kreuk (Hitched)
Donald Faison (The Odds) Michael Imperioli (Detriot 187) Jeri Ryan (Body of Evidence) Jean Smart (Hawaii Five‐O) Skeet Ulrich (Untitled John Wells) Jay Harrington (Nature vs. Nurture) Tom Cavanaugh (Edgar Floats) Daniel Dae Kim (Hawaii Five‐O) Wayne Knight (No Ordinary Family) Traylor Howard (Dana Gould Project) Kurtwood Smith (Hitched) Nicolette Sheridan (Ant Hines‐Untitled) Katee Sackhoff (Richard Hatem‐Untitled) Laurie Metcalf (Strange Brew) Julie Benz (No Ordinary Family) Goran Visnjic (Boston’s Finest) Tony Hale (Awkward Situations for Men)

As an agency, PTG has seen strong positioning of our actors for Series Regular roles. We have had 44 actors go out for Series Regulars in these pilots. That is a very strong showing. However,I have spoken with many of my peer agency owners, and we all have had the same experience this pilot season: we have concluded that most of these auditions are what I call ‘insurance auditions.’ Insurance if the actors who been offered the role do not take the role.

I have pitched to at least 50 CDs this pilot season who all said something along the lines of ‘yes, this client might be right‐on for the role, but the studios/networks are saying STAR NAMES ONLY, and we have an offer out.’ This goes for both my ‘named’ and heavy ‘working actors.’ And for the rest, unfortunately, the days of developmental and semi‐working actors getting a shot at a series regular or recurring role on a pilot are long gone (please see below in market competition II).

MARKET COMPETITION II:
THE CONTINUED DECREASE OF PILOT WORK
Unfortunately, the days of shooting hundreds of pilots are long gone. This paradigm shift occurred due to the WGA strike which allowed studios/networks to restructure how they do business in developing and producing new shows. Shooting a pilot is a very expensive proposition, and now the number of pilots are limited to those which have a great chance of getting a green light or have already been green lit for the fall season. In short,
last year there were 69 pilots and this year 83 (including pilot presentations). This year the market will probably end up at around 65‐70 real pilots shot.

SIDENOTE: Furthermore, the WGA strike also allowed the studios/networks/cablers to provide for pilots year round instead of the primary pilot season as we had all come to know and expect. The good news is more pilots to come throughout the year;. The bad news is that the exclusivity provisions are no longer in place so named actors can do multiple pilots a year if they so choose, instead of being limited to one during traditional pilot season and thereby opening up roles for other non‐named actors. In short, more competition with Top Named actors!
Doing the Math: So, if you calculate that there are 70 pilots being shot this year, with an average series regular cast of 5‐7 (some shows are going to as low as 4 series regulars to save costs), we are talking between 350 and 440 ‘job openings’ in Hollywood this pilot season for top roles. Above, I have already listed 85 roles taken, and that was far from an exhaustive list. To complicate things even more, many strong series recurers and established TV actors with heavy credits from TV shows are vying for the 250‐300 roles that are left. For example, everyone formerly on ER has found a pilot. Finally, what I am hearing from CDs is that even named actors and VERY STRONG working actors are doing Guest Stars on these pilots. So again, the days of a developmental or semi‐working actor finding a spot on a Pilot is highly unlikely.

MARKET COMPETITION III: SECOND OPTION POSITIONING
To make matters worse, some actors with current shows are doing pilots as second position. For example, Allyssa Milano, who is currently on Romantically Challenged, has signed on for Hall Pass as a second option. Kyle Bornheimer, also on Romantically Challenged, has signed on for the Bays/Thomas Project. Rob Morrow, of Numbers fame, is currently second positioning on “the Whole Truth.” The entire lead cast of Better off Ted also was confronted with this opportunity. The show, not performing highly in the ratings, found each one of these actors being offered and accepting second options on pilots.

While this has gone on for years in Hollywood, the rise of competition for named actors/actors currently on TV has led many Casting Directors of Pilots to aggressively pursue currently employed actors. Also a few actors such as Jerry O’Connell have been able to do two pilots as exclusivity provisions did not apply. Again, this just shows that there is a strong demand for named actors/actors on TV, and the networks and studios want established names to push for advertising money up front.
SIDENOTE: Do not forget, the Up‐Fronts, while again having gone through a paradigm shift of their own, are still an imperative positioning place for networks. And network executives obviously feel that TOP NAMED actors will allow them to secure as much Up Front advertising dollars as possible. We are talking billions of advertising dollars committed at these Up‐Fronts and it seems as though NAMED actors are what is selling that ‘Up‐Front’ dollar right now.

Final Thoughts from James J. Jones*
I send this pilot report to my clients in order for them to fully understand the business nature of this – the 2010 Pilot Season. While the trickle down nature of this pilot season (top named stars getting series regulars, top working actors getting series recurers/guest star, guest stars doing co‐stars, etc) is fairly bleak for developmental and semi‐working actors, it is not permanent. The prospects for scripted television on both cable and networks, as well as the increase in new media and feature film production bode very well for the actor. For my developmental and semi‐working actors, please be realistic about your expectations and focus on your craft and getting me the marketing materials I need to do my job. For my ‘named’ and heavy working actors, please understand the level of competition, and be patient... breakthroughs are undoubtedly coming for what should be a vibrant 2010. In short, hang on – work your craft – and stay positive! Good things will happen!

*James J. Jones is the owner of The Premier Talent Group. One if from Joseph Middleton, HUGE casting director in LA -- he offers some really great and practical entries on things that every professional actor in LA should know. The second is a teacher/actor/director named Paul Kampf. Paul is a truly gifted individual who I've had the pleasure of studying with several times. I just took a master class intensive with him this past weekend and it blew my mind. Anyway, check out his site for some amazing thoughts on audition technique and character development.

Joseph Middelton's Blog: CLICK HERE.

Paul Kampf's Blog - "The Right to Act": CLICK HERE

Happy Acting!

Words of Encouragement (II)

I posted some words of encouragement a while back and I thought it was a good idea to post some more. It's pilot season and whether you're going out on auditions every day or have only had one (or none), it's tough to stay positive and energetic in the face of so much rejection. Well you're not alone! Here are some great messages of encouragement I've heard lately that I thought I'd share:

APPRECIATE EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE: Look upon every experience you’ve ever had, and everyone who’s ever played any role in your life, as having been sent to you for your benefit. In this universe, which was created by a divine, organizing intelligence, there are simply no accidents. (Dr. Wayne Dyer)

Retreat in peace and let the universe handle the details.

Only the wrong doors close.

If you don't get out of line, it will eventually become your turn.

All your life you are told the things you cannot do. All your life they will say you're not good enough or strong enough or talented enough; they will say you're the wrong height or the wrong weight or the wrong type to play this or be this or achieve this. THEY WILL TELL YOU NO, a thousand times no, until all the no's become meaningless. All your life they will tell you no, quite firmly and very quickly. AND YOU WILL TELL THEM YES.

Break legs!

Joining AFTRA Could Help You Advance to the Next Level

So this pilot season, there are 93 pilots that are covered under AFTRA (American Federation of Television and Radio Artists), the smaller sister union to SAG (Screen Actors Guild). Many people will tell you that if you're not in an actor's union, you can't get an agent. In this increasingly competitive industry, joining AFTRA may help actors WHO ARE TRAINED AND READY to get an agent and secure more roles.

Unlike SAG, you don't have to get a union job before joining AFTRA. Anyone can join, but there are some vital caveats that you must consider before signing up:

-- You will no longer be able to do non-union work if you join. If you think you can do non-union work and not get caught, think again. The unions have ways to track this and it can lead to suspension or even expulsion from the union permanently. You may also have to pay fines. Not a risk you want to take. Also, if you join a professional union, that means that you believe you should be paid more for your work, should be eligible for health insurance and should perform in productions that are equal to your talent.

-- It will cost you $1,300 to join AFTRA and about $64 a year in dues (plus a percentage of your yearly earnings) to remain in good standing.

Check out AFTRA's website for more information. Also, here's a very helpful article regarding what you can expect after you join AFTRA.

GREAT list of acting classes in Los Angeles for kids and adults

Pilot season is in full swing and the best thing you can do during this time is to stay fresh! We have to spend money on headshots, wardrobe, makeup, classes and casting sites. We pay for casting workshops, weekend intensives and marketing materials. Stamps, reproductions and computer equipment cost a pretty penny as well. With all these expenses, I am constantly in awe of every actor who can keep up with this constant barrage of expenses and still have time to audition and work. Congratulations to those of you who are taking care of business! I know it's tough, especially during this time of economic slowdown.

I think it's important to be smart with your money and save it when you can. On that note, SAG has published an excellent article on how to avoid casting scams that are designed to take your money. While there are countless industry professionals working hard on the behalf of actors, there are also plenty of people who are looking to pull the wool over the eyes of unsuspecting actors. Unfortunately, there are some bad apples out there who prey on actors (most of whom live outside of major markets).

Particularly in the entertainment industry, the old adage holds true: "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."

All over the country, actors, models, singers and other performers are being taken advantage of when it comes to agents, managers and booking/casting directors. Although there are obviously many well respected agencies and managers who are diligently working to help actors realize their dreams, there are just as many scammers out there whose sole interest is taking your money. Here are some ways to avoid getting scammed:

1. If you are asked for a deposit or fee for an agent or manager or casting person, it is likely a scam. No reputable agent or manager or casting director charges you for work or auditions. You only pay an agent or manager (never a casting director) when they book you work. At this point, they negotiate for their commission (10% for agents or 15% for managers) and only get paid when you do.

EXCEPTION: there are some nationwide casting services/talent searches that ask you to pay for their services and actually DO place actors as extras or featured actors in small commercials and print campaigns. However, if you're looking to be a full time actor, you'll want to look for an agent based in a major city who does not charge a fee.

2. Look for SAG-franchised (www.sag.org for more info) agencies, but don't rule out ones that aren't. Even some of the top 5 agencies in LA are not sag-franchised due to various reasons, so instead ask for a SAG contract when you sign with the agency. When in doubt, contact SAG (Screen Actors Guild) for verification of any agency.

3. Many agents will recommend certain photographers for headshots (especially commercial agents). This is not necessarily a scam, since many agents like working with certain photogs because their work gets their clients jobs. Use your best judgement. If the agent asks you to pay THEM instead of the photographer, it is likely a scam.

4. Avoid situations that simply don't feel right. If you find an audition online that requires you to go to someone's house at 8pm for an audition, it might be a scam. NOTE: some independent projects are VERY worthwhile and are cast out of someone's home at night because the producer/director works a day job. Again, use your best judgement here. When in doubt, ask a friend to go along with you. If you arrive and no one else is there, candles are lit and soft music is playing -- LEAVE.

Craigslist is a place where questionable opportunities often crop up, as well as legitimate ones. I would say stick to casting sites like LACASTING.COM, ACTORSACCESS.COM and NOWCASTING.COM to find the best auditions.

Overall, use your best judgement to avoid getting taken. Don't do any work without contracts and always be clear about how you'll get paid before you perform.

Happy Acting!

Asking for Advice: BE SPECIFIC!

I think it's so important to ask other industry professionals for advice --- it's the reason I created this blog! I (and a number of actors I know) get lots of emails asking for advice about everything from getting an agent to photographers to classes to audition advice (all of which I've covered in this blog, so check those entries out!).

Although I try to respond to every email, it's tough to answer queries in which people want to know EVERYTHING about the business. I just don't know how to answer broad questions like "How can I become famous?" or "Do you have any advice for me?" I would advise people to instead ask ONE specific question. It's easier to answer "How long have you been with your current agent?" or "How did you get your current agent?" (Answers by the way: 2 years, referral from my manager). Everyone's path is SO different, so I always just say FOLLOW YOUR PASSION and you can never go wrong!

And just keeping it real here -- an actor you don't know (not just me, any actor) is not likely to refer you to their own agent or meet with you in person. Be realistic with your expectations. An answer to a question is one thing, but asking for an actor to meet with you and outline your career path is entirely another. :-) Plus, this is an adventure and it wouldn't be any fun if you didn't do it your own way!

Thanks for reading!

Great Talks from SAG Foundation

Check out an industry night with a panel of agents in LA -- GREAT information on how to get an agent and keep working in Hollywood!

http://www.sagfoundation.org/liferaft/livestream

NOTE: Fast forward through the first few minutes to get to the panel section.

Getting Started in 2010 -- Pilot Season is NOW

So maybe you've heard of pilot season but you aren't exactly sure what is or when. Here are the basics: Pilot Season is the period between January and April of each year (approx.) during which networks produce new television shows for the fall season. But landing and shooting a pilot is just the beginning. The vast majority of pilots don't ever get picked up. So, to actually land a pilot, shoot it and make it on the air in the fall (or in the winter as a mid-season replacement) is VERY RARE. This is why I tell people all the time to simply move to LA and make acting your life if you're serious. You can't just come to LA for pilot season and then go back to your hometown and expect any results. You have to live here, develop relationships with casting directors and land smaller roles that will lead you to a leading role in a pilot.

With all that said, I received an email today from a young lady (who's name I've deleted for her privacy) asking me about how to begin in the business. Although I've addressed this in prior blogs, I thought it'd be good to revisit the subject. Here's the email:

Hi Robin,

My name is ______, i came across your blog while looking for information on Pilot season in LA.

I am 24yrs old and my ambition is to be an actress.
I am only starting out and found your blog to be very helpful.

I have a BA degree in Journalism and Media Communications but it has always been my dream to act.
I have completed a few courses but i am not too sure where to start, can you offer any advise on where to begin?

_____________________

So here's my advice, in a nutshell:

1. REALLY discover who you are as an actor. This business is all about pigeonholing (in a good way, mostly) so you have to know your type (best friend, girl next door, vixen, etc), your acting style (comedy, drama, etc) and what makes you different. I'm a sketch comedian and a TV actor by and large, so I focused on agents/managers and casting directors who were looking for that type when I first started building my relationships in the business.

2. So now that you know your type, get into classes. If you don't have improv training -- get it. NOW. Even if you don't do comedy, this type of training will make you better at AUDITIONS as well as acting. Second City, Improv Olympic, Groundlings and Upright Citizens Brigade are tops in LA.

3. Get updated headshots and postcards and send those puppies out! Don't break the bank, but target some Casting Directors who would likely cast you. Keep your message short and action oriented -- include messages like "I recently worked on ____ and check out my new website at ____". CREATE interest in YOU.

4. RESEARCH. You have to know what pilots are out there and which are looking for your type. Backstage West, Entertainment Weekly, Variety and other resources can be very helpful here if you don't have an agent working for you. Speaking of which, you aren't going to have much luck during network pilot season if you don't have one. I can't tell you how to get one, it's VERY hard these days. Usually a professional referral is the only way, but some agents have open calls and also take mailed submissions. Check LACASTING.com for a great list of who accepts what.

5. Don't forget about commercials. Reconnect with your commercial agent or get one asap (submit your headshots, attend open calls or get a referral from a GOOD friend who knows you're talented). This work can sustain you through the tough times during pilot season and beyond.

Happy Acting!

Happy Holidays and a Prosperous New Year!

I've been gone for a while, sorry for that!

Wanted to say a quick HAPPY HOLIDAYS to all and I know if you're like me, you're looking forward to a prosperous and productive new year!

Use time with you family to create your story -- find the good and bad in your life and write it down. Greene and associates
-Agency for the Performing Arts
-AKA
-Diverse
-Media Artists Group
-GVA

To get an agent, you need to get GREAT headshots, a good resume, and training from the best. These are enough to get you a commercial agent at least. Getting a GOOD theatrical agent (Film/tv) takes longer. Most good theatrical agents won't see you unless you're SAG, have a polished resume, and a demo reel. Commercial agents are more lenient about that. What the best Commercial agents want to see on your resume are good commercial classes, improv, and cold reading.

You can get an agent multiple ways. Here are a few common ways:
-Mail in an unsealed manilla envelope with a CONCISE coverletter and headshot with the resume stapled on the back. If you have a demoreel include that too.
-Attend a showcase and impress them. I mean legit ones like at TVI, Reel pros, etc.
-Get a referral from a friend who is with the agency that you're interested in (USUALLY BEST WAY)

DON'T
-Email them unless they tell you to. So sorry! As many of you know, I have been working with an amazing sketch comedy group called Elite Delta Force 3 (www.elitedeltaforce3.com). We've been performing in Los Angeles and are about to embark on a nationwide tour this summer! How exciting!

I mention all this for two reasons. One, to shamelessly self-promote :-) Two, to remind you that just 6 months ago, six other ladies and I got together to put up some sketches. Since then, this group has turned into a phenomenon that is now going on the road and has garnered the attention of many powerful producers and Hollywood heavies.

Just imagine what you could be doing six months from now if you start on your project today?

Don't delay one more day!

Once In A Lifetime? Not Always...

So what do you do when you've got that big audition? That HUGE role you're going in for that you just KNOW you're perfect for?

Do you psych yourself up and rehearse like a mad man/woman?

Do you tell yourself that you're just going to do your best and not worry about it?

or

Do you spend a week before the audition wondering how you'll mess up?

I think it's in these times that we are challenged to rely on our training and experience up to this very point. I truly believe that nothing is put in front of us that we cannot handle and that we are not prepared for in some way. Although opportunities will always pop up that will shock/surprise you, I think that it's our reaction to these moments that is the truest test of character.

I recently had a pilot callback for producers for an ABC series. I loved the writing, I just KNEW I was perfect for the role. In the room, I found myself doing something I had never done in rehearsal. My body language was weird, my voice sounded alien to me and I almost felt like I wasn't there. What IS that? I'm usually very confident in rooms and I know I did ample prep before going in.

I have come to realize that I think I put too much pressure on myself to "show" them what I had and how perfect I was instead of just BEING that. Often times, people over perform (in auditions, on dates, in job interviews, at work, on the bus, etc.) to win people over when it's better to just be yourself.

Lesson learned for me. Next time the big one comes, I'll be ready.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://robinthede.blogspot.com/2009/04/once-in-lifetime-not-always.html' title='Once In A Lifetime? The super talented ladies I work with are all working actresses with successful credits and long resumes. But we also know that no one is going to just throw work at us, so we created our own show and it's SO fulfilling!

So what do you LOVE to do? Comedy? Drama? Plays? Whatever that is, I want us all to REDISCOVER our passions. Regardless of the recession!

If you're just starting out, explore lots of options to find out what interests you most. More than likely, though, you tend to gravitate towards certain areas. If you watch soaps, comedies, horror flicks, whatever -- then you already know where your passion lies. Even if you don't know how to do what you love, you can learn!

Get into training and go after that thing you've been putting off. If you love comedy but don't think you're funny -- get in an improv class! If you love drama but everyone thinks you're hilarious -- jump into a Meisner class and explore your dramatic side. Most importantly, look at things with a LONG TERM vision. You can't expect to take one class and be an expert. It takes YEARS to hone any craft and those who work regularly know that you never stop learning and you can always improve.

All the best!

Doing What You Love

In hard economic times, many of us are doing what we can to make ends meet. Do you have any free time to commit to your passion?

I know we have to work to make money to live. But I think there's a fine line between working and devoting mental energy to jobs that were initially supposed to simply "pay the bills".... I'm not saying that you shouldn't do well at your day job, but I am saying that if you're more concerned with your next promotion than your next audition, your focus may have shifted. And that's okay, I'm just challenging you to take a look at your situation realistically. Do you turn down acting work because you have to work your day job? Have you stopped auditioning altogether?

If you're still interested in acting (if not, that's okay too!)? For those beginners out there, pilot season is the time of year (typically from January to April) when the networks shoot a bunch of television shows to see what they will introduce in their fall lineup.

Each network used to shoot 100 or more pilots, but that's not the norm anymore with massive budget cuts. So how do you make the most of this time for next year? Here's how you can start now:

Now:
1. Move to Los Angeles. I've never understood people who come to LA for a few months or weeks and hope to make it big. Not saying it doesn't work, but it's very rare.

April-August 2009
2. Get a good or better agent. This is easier said than done but now is the time to put up a showcase, take meetings and schmooze your way into a better representation situation.

August-November 2009
3. Push to land co-star and guest star roles. This will put you in a better position for pilots if producers know you're currently working. Casting directors will also have you fresh in mind for projects.

December 2009
4. Take a pilot prep or scene study class. Remember how to do a great character analysis and brush up on cold reading.

January-April 2010
5. Pilot auditions! Send out postcards with reminders of recent work and push for your favorite casting directors to see you.

Good luck in 2010!

Getting the Perfect Headshots

Taking headshots is typically something actors either really enjoy doing or hate with a passion. I tend to be the latter. I get nervous, my hair never does what I want and I can't seem to get my expression right. But what I have found helpful is looking through hundreds of shots to see what poses, faces and outfits look best. If you study something that makes you nervous, you can often master it through education.

Be sure to look at headshots critically for composition and marketability as well. If you wouldn't call YOU in for an audition (based on your headshot), why would anyone else? Search and search and then shoot until you find the right combination. Bring in examples of pictures you like to your photographer and ask for duplication of the best elements. Also, spend the money ($150-$300) on a great photographer to ensure high quality.

Picture Time!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 134px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_SXB7-BZmyxA/SbgP-n1rApI/AAAAAAAAACM/8QqSgXQjfyE/s200/robinT_027.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5312013329003905682" />
Okay, it's been six months or a year (or more! What are you GOOD at? Comedy? Drama? Don't say you can do it all because you will get cast in nothing. TELL casting people what you do, find the work in that arena, gain experience, THEN you can branch out. In my estimation, a jack of all trades and master of none rarely works in Hollywood. Here's a trick -- look at the stars you admire and look at the timeline of their work on IMDB. Find the pattern -- I guarantee you there is one -- and see how long they did a specific type of work and how they broke out. Mirror the greats to be great but forge a path that is uniquely true to YOU.

Showcase Your Work to Get Representation

I've been working with an all-female sketch group (www.elitedeltaforce3.com) for a few months now, creating shows and putting them up around Los Angeles. The work feels so good because I'm writing, acting, improvising and learning.

What are you doing for your career? Are you writing? Are you in a show? Are you in a play reading group? Find a creative outlet without breaking the bank. Then turn it into something that casting directors, agents and managers will want to come support.

So many people ask me how to get an agent -- my new answer is: SHOW THEM WHAT YOU DO. Get a group of people together who are as good as you or BETTER (this is key) and put up a showcase of dramatic, comedic or futuristic work. Keep it 45 minutes or less and serve refreshments (or alcohol!). Make sure it's free or you have comp tickets for industry -- otherwise they won't come.

Lastly, work with people WHO ALREADY HAVE AGENTS. That way, when they come to see their client, they will also be impressed with you and may approach you about representation! Make them come to you! Be sure to have press kits at the ticket office with your headshot/resume and contact information on it so they can reach you.

Good luck!

Step Up Your Game in 2009

Stepping up your game will put you ahead of the thousands of actors who are just sitting around, complaining about a possible strike. Here are some things you can do RIGHT now:

1. Update your headshots. If it's been six months or you aren't going out -- RESHOOT. www.hypnoticheadshots.com is a great new photographer I just started using.

2. Send out postcards to casting directors who love you. Let them know what you're doing.

3. Call SAG about missing residuals. You never know what might be waiting for you!

4. WRITE SOMETHING. Creating your own one-person show, monologue or sketch comedy scene will help you stay fresh and put your work out in the public. Even if you perform it at a coffee shop, it's SOMETHING!

5. Reconnect with other actors. Start an actor's reading group and review current TV or movie scripts. Do character research and really rehearse as if the role were yours. That way, you'll be ready when the opportunity comes.

It's rough out there for all of us, but stick it out!

Recession Job Ideas for Actors

This week's entry is geared towards those actors who are really struggling with paying the bills! Freelance Writer (Demand Studios, Associated Content, etc.)
4. Babysitting
5. Bartending/Waitressing (I know, obvious, but some people forget!)
6. Notary Public (doesn't cost that much to get certified and you can create your own rates!)
7. Sell Proprietary Products (Avon, Mona Vie, etc.)
8. House Cleaning (Ask your friends! You'd be surprised how much they'd pay you!)
9. Catering (Your own or for a company)
10. Here are some ideas...

Instead of sending out a million mailings to commercial and theatrical casting directors (which I think is a HUGE waste of time).... try this list of productive tasks to help you boost your preparation and opportunities as an actor:

1. Watch commercials and popular TV shows daily. Study what the actors do and compare it to your audition style.

2. Work at night or on the weekends. You've got to be available for auditions/meetings.

3. Sign up for LA Casting and Actor's Access. Submit yourself for work daily.

4. Shoot scenes with your friends, edit them together in iMovie with some music and titles and post them online (facebook, youtube,etc.). That way, when a casting director asks you for a reel, you can send and instant link (no more wasting money on editing and burning DVDs!) -- even if you've never worked a "real" acting job!

5. Read scenes OUT LOUD daily. Even if only for 15 minutes, this will help you get more comfortable in cold reading and audition situations.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://robinthede.blogspot.com/2009/02/stay-busy-every-day-here-are-some-ideas.html' title='Stay Busy EVERY Day! This will be expected to happen instantly and quickly -- so what do you do if you have all your work on VHS?! YIKES! Here are a couple of steps to get you caught up in the instant era of online reels:

1. Have all your VHS tapes transferred to DVD. You can pay to have an editor do this, but a cheaper way is to find a friend with a DVD/VHS machine and do it yourself! They can even be purchased for under $100 (which is more than likely cheaper than hiring an editor for the same job, depending on where you live).

2. Log all your digital media (list all the work you have on each DVD) and review it to choose the best scenes. Look for scenes that highlight YOUR skills and avoid including too many other people--after all, this is about YOU.

3. At this point, you can take your media to an editor or edit your reel yourself. If you are unfamiliar with how a reel should look, then view reels online until you get a sense of what they should look like (www.speedreels.com is a great resource). Before you go to an editor (or edit in iMovie or Final Cut), be sure to have a precise outline of which scenes you want, in what order and where they are on your media DVDs. This will save you time and more importantly, MONEY! If you don't do this, it may take 3 hours of editing time versus one hour (a difference of up to $150-200 or more).

NOTE: Even if you don't know how to edit, try it out in your spare time. If you have a Mac computer, play around with adding clips in iMovie. You can add titles, transitions and music easily and export it directly to a DVD. You can also use the "share" feature to convert it to a Quicktime movie that you can then upload to a website (like www.tinypic.com) that will allow you to send an instant link to your reel to casting directors, agents, etc. And best of all -- IT'S FREE!!!

Questions? Post them here and I'll answer them in my next entry.

Mimic Your Heroes

Who do you admire in the business? Tom Hanks? Halle Berry? Angelina Jolie? Meryl Streep? No matter who you admire, how big they are or what they do, it's important that you can identify with someone who has the type of career that you would like to have. Study everything that person has done and find out how you can set yourself on a similar path. While your fate will never be the same as the next person, you can bring yourself closer to success when you learn what makes the greats great. This may mean studying at an improv theatre, performing live on stage or trying standup comedy.... whatever it is -- do it with gusto. You have to be willing to risk it all to gain it all!

Jump Start the New Year!

It's 2009. It's a new year and time for new acting tools! Here are some ways to invigorate your career by focusing energy and time into your daily activities:

1. Re-edit your reel. Add all new work and try a different approach to your reel's format. If you don't have any new work, then shoot some monologues or sketches. Chances are, you know someone who has a camera and access to iMovie or some other basic editing program to help you do this for free.

2. Get new headshots! These are your calling card. They should be colorful, current and accurate. If you can't afford a professional photographer, find a photography student at a local school who wants to add to a portfolio.

3. Re-connect with your representation. Let them know in a brief email or phone call about your current projects and writing endeavors. Express interest in certain aspects of your career, such as hosting or voiceover work. This can help you diversify your opportunities for work.

4. Get a mentor. Find someone who's doing what you want to do and ask them to mentor you. This can be invaluable in helping you think of new ways to approach your career.

5. Update all resumes online (LA Casting, Now Casting, Actor's Access, iActor, etc.) and on your headshots. Remove old credits and streamline your resume with your only your best work. Casting directors don't want to sift through a bunch of credits that are no longer relevant.

Good Luck!

Ring In The New Year!

On this day before New Year's Eve, why not take a moment to outline 12 goals for 2009? However, to avoid the pitfalls of quickly-forgotten new year's resolutions, here's a way to plan out your next year and stick with it.

First, review the year in total as it relates to your career. Write down what you accomplished month by month in the past year, whether it be acting jobs, classes and/or taking new headshots. Anything that helped you work or advance your career is fair game here. Look at the list, and find out what times you are busier than others. Is there a pattern here? Also, maybe the down times are good times for the next year in which to take a small vacation, work on writing or perform a show. I always find my Julys are slower than other months...

Second, make a separate list of auditions from the past year and calculate the percentage that you book TV jobs, Films and commercials. This should be easy to do if you keep an audition log.... If you don't have one of these, then get one for the new year ASAP! Once you've got the ratio of auditions to bookings, then you can focus on what areas need strengthening.

Third, make a list of all the projects you started in the past year and which you accomplished vs. which you didn't. Use this list to figure out what to carry over into the next year and what to leave behind. These could include updating your pictures, website or bio (which you should be doing regularly anyway).

Finally, congratulate yourself on a year well spent. So, here are some of my random thoughts on getting an agent in today's (recession-affected) environment:

1. If you're not a pro at what you do, stay where you are and get better before moving to LA. Even for those of us who have shows/credit under our belts (and this includes actors WAY more experienced than me), getting and keeping an agent in this climate is next to impossible. Agencies are FIRING half (or more) of their clients who aren't making them the big bucks just to keep their doors open. It is SOOOOO hard to get an agent here now (I was without one for THREE YEARS), and that's just the truth. At least from my point of view.

Something to consider: the only reason I have my current agent is because I do sketch comedy/improv (Second City, I.O.), I write (with show credits on my resume) and I am a host/entertainment reporter (E! News, Sirius radio). Most actors only have one main skill, so I challenge you to develop more. MANY more, to make yourself attractive to agents.

2. Okay, so you're in LA already and you need an agent. I personally can't help you. Let me just say that first :-) However, you never know who can. Ask EVERY actor you know what their agents look for, you may find one that would be interested in setting up a meeting with you. The other option is to get a manager who can refer you to an agent. How do you do this? Again, network and send in pictures/reels. But cold mailing and calling is rarely successful, since these places are inundated with them. Try to make a personal contact at a networking event, through others in the business, etc.

3. You want to come to LA for a few weeks to "test it out." To me, this is silly. How would you ever know what it's like out here in that amount of time? If you feel you're ready -- JUST MOVE. If you're not -- DON'T! It's really that simple. I've never understood why people come to LA "for pilot season" and then go back home. Casting directors don't know you and they won't after you leave. I moved to LA 6 years ago to work 10 years to become an "overnight success." That's how I've always thought about it, but I also recognize that everyone's story is different.

At the end of the day, that's what you have to know. You have to be here (IN LA) to do the work and you can't ask any actor for advice since everyone forges their own path completely differently. But you also have to know that no one is unique like you and there eventually is room for all of us. You just have to stick it out and never give up!

Oops! You Dropped Something

Is name dropping a big no-no? Once you get to a certain point in your career, you're simply bound to be surrounded by other working actors, and you may even become friends with some of them. However, name-dropping can be quite annoying. Further, you never know how people feel about your famous friend (this business is very much like high school), so keep your celebrity associations under wraps in most situations, unless directly asked. As actors begin to work, they like to talk a lot about "who they know," but in the long run, I think this serves very little purpose except to inflate your ego. The general rule? If it is necessary to the conversation to mention someone you know, then fine. If not, leave it alone. No one cares as much as you do and they are definitely NOT impressed --- you have to always remember that people are very insecure in this business and they could be threatened by your enviable Hollywood stories. :-)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://robinthede.blogspot.com/2008/11/name-dropping.html' title='Oops! A second pass at sides can be a Godsend in an audition. If a casting director asks you to try something different, listen INTENTLY to what they say and incorporate it immediately. DROP what you've been rehearsing for days and start over. If you can't do this, pracctice in improv classes or with friends using this simple exercise:

Say the phrase "I love you and that's all that matters" without any emotion or inflection.

Then, have a friend/classmate/coach give you direction (i.e. "Say it with love," "Say it with hate," "Say it like you could care less," etc.) and practice adjusting on the fly. Don't PREPARE - you have to be able to do this at a moment's notice. Then, if you can do this in an audition, you'll be able to show the casting director that you take great direction and they'll hire you! Good luck!

Second Time Around (Part I)

Great acting is about making great choices. Your talent lies in your choices, says Stella Adler. So, when you're in the audition room, always ask to do the sides again if the situation allows for it. Sometimes, the casting director wants to get you in and out, but often you can show your strength and versatility as an actor by asking for direction and then doing a second read.

Keep in mind that sometimes, this isn't realistic and you should take a hint when asked to leave. However, if there seems to be an appropriate moment, as the casting director if you can try it again. CAUTION: Be sure to make your second pass BETTER and DIFFERENT. If you're just doing it again to get more camera time, forget it. But if you feel like you were nervous during your first pass, take advantage of the next pass to do better. Also be sure to ask if the casting director has any adjustments for you. Here are some ways to ask:

"I'd love to try that one more time. Do you have any adjustments?"

"Would you mind if I do that one more time? I'd love to incorporate any direction you have."

Be sure to REALLY take advantage of this second chance and REALLY interpret what the casting director tells you. Now, how do you adjust once you get notes? Stay tuned for my next entry.....

Tone It Down

Bit parts (co-stars, under-fives, etc.) are great stepping stones to larger roles in TV and film. However, they can be harder to get than most actors think! And who wants to drive all the way across town, say one line and NOT book the job?! In order to book these roles, keep in mind that if you're going in for a character that only has one or two lines -- you are NOT the star or even that important in the grand scheme of the plot.

So, the key to getting the audition is to be as real as possible. As much as you want to "shine," you just don't have this type of latitude with co-star roles (usually). Just read the line as natural as possible and strip away all acting. If the line is "How can I help you?," just say it as you would in your everyday life. Don't try to add something special or some weird inflection in order to "Stand Out." This will only make you look weird. If you leave the audition feeling like you didn't do much, chances are you did it just perfect. :-)

Take It Seriously

As actors, we have to ask ourselves a critical question:

WHY am I an actor?

The answer to this is crucially important, primarily for actors just starting out. There is no wrong answer, by the way. Even if you say "To be famous" or "To be rich," your answer is valid. You don't have to say "Because I want to perfect the craft" or "To heal the world through performance." Let's get real, these answers truly don't apply to many of us.

The reason I bring this up is because I think some of us simply stay in the business because we made it a goal but it no longer applies. In a recent visit to my commercial and theatrical agents, both teams expressed that they were "trimming the fat" -- letting go of actors who didn't work or (more prevalently) who didn't WANT to work. They said that they had actors on the roster who would literally complain when called about auditions -- they would say "Oh, I don't want to go on that" or "I have something else to do at that time" -- WHAT?! Why would you ever sabotage your career that way?

If you can answer the question "Why am I am actor?" then you can prioritize your work opportunities. I know we all have to work jobs and we have to make a living, but there should NEVER be a reason that you turn down an audition or complain about getting them. If your agent isn't submitting you for the type of jobs you're comfortable with, that's a different conversation. But if you're simply being lazy, that's another. I challenge all of us to regularly evaluate how seriously we take our careers and dedicate ourselves anew to "being famous" or "perfecting the craft." Whatever your reason, make it work and you will work.

The Basics of Agents (for young/new actors)

I had the privilege of working on an NBC sitcom this week, and a young lady who was working as an extra asked me how I got the job. I told her that I had auditioned for the part and then been hired by the producers. She asked me how she could get an agent. So, I'll list here the advice I gave her on "the basics" of acting and getting work:

1. Build up your resume. Audition for local short films or readings at local colleges or theatres. Get everything on tape for your reel (a dvd montage of scenes of your work).

2. Once you've got this, take headshots. These are COLOR, 8x10 photographs that represent you in a natural, yet attractive way.

3. Submit to agents by sending your headshot (with a link to your reel online -- don't send DVDs, they are too expensive!) to agents in your area. The Screen Actors Guild provides a list of these in most major markets (http://www.sag.org).

- You can also be referred to an agent by another actor, so always ask actors who they are represented by and if they would refer you.

- Submit to commercial agents first. It can be easier to get a commercial agent than a theatrical (TV/FILM) agent in most markets.

4. Participate in industry showcases to attract agents to you with your work. NBC, CBS and other networks all do big showcases every year to which you can submit yourself online or by mail.

5. Sign up for LA Casting, Now Casting, and/or Actor's Access. On these sites, you can submit yourself for jobs and be your own agent in the meantime.

Break legs!

Creating Your Own Work

Is essential. Whether you write, shoot, edit or improvise, you have to put yourself out there. No agent or casting director is sitting around trying to find ways to make you famous (unless you're REALLY lucky), and even then the parts may not reflect what you really want. Find out who you are and team up with those artists around you to create work you're proud of. Here are some ideas:

* Start a play reading group that meets/performs monthly.
* Meet with fellow writers 2x a month to discuss new ideas.
* Attend plays with the same group of actors and post a blog of your critiques.
* Meet with improvisers once a month at your house and just play.
* Shoot a short film with your digital camera or your phone and put it on YouTube.

Have fun!

Save Money and Get More From Your Career

In these rough economic times, many of us are looking for ways to cut corners. Headshots, reproductions, costumes, websites and reels can be hugely expensive, but are necessary tools for actors. We spend thousands of dollars a year on these items and while they may be nice write-offs at tax time, they can be large burdens during slim financial times. Here are some tips for stretching your dollar (or not spending any money!) on the things you must have for your career:

Headshots: Post an ad at a local photography class or school advertising your "modeling" services. Advertise that you are an actor looking for shots in exchange for use in portfolios. Many photographers start out looking for free models in exchange for photos and you can take advantage of this. If you're worried about quality, bring samples of headshots that you like and have the photographer mirror the looks as best as possible. Come with tons of ideas and locations so you make sure to get a product you can use. If the pictures are horrible, at least you've lost nothing!

Barter your services: Do you have any CDs or DVDs sitting around? What about computer software or an external hard drive? An editor may trade you reel editing services in exchange for your eqiupment. If you don't have any material items to offer, how about your acting services? You could perform at a corporate get-together, bartend at the editing company's holiday party or give the editor's kids acting lessons in exchange for your reel. Be creative!

Reproductions: Order lithographs, they are much cheaper than photo reproductions and they are much sturdier as well, since they are printed on card stock instead of photo paper. Glossy finish is better than matte. Shop around among web suppliers if you can't find a great deal in your town. www.isgophoto.com is the service I use and you can save even more by skipping proofs and setting up your name yourself in the online kiosk on this site (save $30!).

Cut back: Order 25 headshots instead of 100. Order 1 reel instead of 25 and get a friend with iDVD to duplicate it for you with their computer and the DVDs you buy yourself from Office Depot. When you have an audition, go run all your errands right after so you have less trips to make during the week and you can save on gas. Offer to help a friend run lines for an audition in exchange for dinner. Shop at thrift stores for costumes and sell your old clothes at consignment shops. Above all else, put yourself on a budget but don't stop working every day toward your goals!

Reality Shows...Are they acting jobs?

Hmm, I've managed to avoid them in my career, although I've been asked to participate in a few. Hidden camera shows, sketch comedy/man on the street shows and shows like "Punk'd" are not reality to me, since they are actor-heavy and plot-driven. Even shows like "The Hills" are scripted to a certain point, but I do think this is where serious actors have to draw the line. What reality show star do you know who has made a real transition into acting? The only one I can even think of is Greg Kinnear. He was a host on "Talk Soup" and made an amazing transition into a stunning film career. But he was more of a host, not a reality star.

I guess my opinion, then, is to avoid reality shows as a serious actor. If you want to be a celebrity or to just forge out a career in the new world of reality (which can be very lucrative!), then go for it! But if you are concerned about doing the best work you can and not just about being in the spotlight, then stay away from "unscripted" (yeah, right) TV or web projects. I think it can be harder to dig out of that hole than to create a name for yourself from the start.

The Importance of Feedback

If you have an agent and/or manager, one of the most important roles I believe they can serve is to be the follow-up. After an audition, it's vital that you learn what the casting director thought of you, particularly if it's the first time you've been in for him/her. Many times, you won't land a job because of circumstances that have NOTHING to do with you or your performance (They wanted a redhead, the director's girlfriend got the role, etc.), but then there are times where you can use feedback to improve every audition you go on.

For instance, maybe you didn't appear confident, maybe you misinterpreted the context of the scene, or maybe the casting director thought your look was messy or too sexy. Either way, this is vital information that your representative can get for you. And make it clear that you don't want them to mince their words. Honest criticism is the only kind that will help you get better every time. Take the feedback with a grain of salt, but pay close attention to those pieces of advice that hit home.

Use Internet Work to Your Advantage

For those of us in the comedy world, the Internet is a grand tool for getting work out there fast. You can shoot a sketch and post it instantly. Sites like Funnyordie.com and others are giving us venues that were never available even three years ago.

Now, even the most serious thespian can use the web to post projects that Network Execs might be wary of taking a chance on in traditional TV formats. For instance, I was recently priveleged enough to be a part of a new web series called "BUPPIES" (see trailer below) which is a fascinating look into the lives of up and coming Hollywood types who are struggling to make their dreams come true in the toughest biz around.

Maybe you've got a clip you want to post or a short you want to shoot? Do it! It's a great resource to have and the next time someone asks you where they can see your work, you don't have to tell them to wait for a re-run of "CSI," you can send a direct link to current work!

Enjoy!

Enjoy Your Work

It's hard to enjoy the craft of acting when we as actors are rarely actually acting! Think about it, you spend most of your time waiting for an audition or prepping for one, but very little time actually doing it (unless you're very lucky). To discourage stagnation, I recommend that you find ways to exercise your acting muscles. Get together weekly with a group of likeminded actors and improv or play games. Even if they are simple things, getting workouts with others can help keep you fresh and energized about your career! Not to mention it can remind you that we're all in the same boat, even in hard times. :-)

Do Your Homework!

You'll often hear me say (or read me write!) that IMDB.com is a helpful resource. Well, this is an understatement! When you go to an audition, you should know everything you can about the writer, the director, the producers, and the other actors already working on the show. This will help you gain a well rounded idea of the types of projects the staff and cast have worked on before, as well as what you can expect from the room once you go in. And, this site allows you one-stop researching, which is always a plus. Who knows? The director may have been a grip on another show you worked on in the past or an actor you've worked with may now be the show's writer... stay one step ahead at all times!

Plant Seeds Everyday

A good gardener tends to her crop daily, making sure there are no weeds sneaking in or any rodents eating away at all her hard work. As an actor, you must do the same. Not to overrun this metaphor, but you must plant seeds and tend to your garden every day. It's not enough to hope daily that your agent will call. After all, he takes 10 percent while you take 90 percent, so you should be doing 90 percent of the work!

This means sending update postcards, thank you cards, and networking with your connections. Find interesting tidbits to share that will keep you top of mind in the brains of people who can help you. If your mind is constantly focused on the work, you will attract great opportunities to you. If you're low on funds or ideas, get creative. Maybe just send out an email to fellow actors and ask what they do in down times. Update your website, email a director you worked with years ago, redo your closet and weed out outfits that don't work for auditions and iron those that do! Write a play. Read up on Meisner. Practice old sides in the mirror or videotape yourself and critique your technique. Look over old class notes and refresh. There are so many things you can do to invigorate your acting energy, so get started!

Google Yourself!

In a continuation of my rant regarding your "web presence".... I'd like to suggest that my fellow actors take advatange of the Internet in new ways. Do a "Web First Impression" check... and clean up any links you might not want out there! Here's a checklist:

1. Google yourself -- In the google.com search bar, type in your name with QUOTATION marks around it. For example, "Robin Thede" not Robin Thede. This will narrow down your results to just things that relate to you (unless you have a really common name, but it will still help).

2. Evaluate the links that come up and adjust pages that you have access to....such as Facebook or Myspace. Sometimes, you will be shocked at what comes up! A rude comment someone left on your myspace, a picture someone tagged you in that may not be flattering, etc.

3. IMMEDIATELY delete comments (made by you or others), pictures, and other elements that may alarm potential employers (i.e. Casting Directors, agents, etc.). You only have 15 SECONDS to make a first good impression in this business!

4. If there are links that you simply can't do anything about (old movies you did, other people's pages, etc.), then create more pages -- get yourself listed on IMDB.com (The Internet Movie Database), TVGuide.com, myspace, facebook, whatever.... to help push out negative page listings. This may take a while but it's crucial that you are aware of what your web presence is before those who hire you do.

A note about IMDB.com -- keep close track of this site and make sure your past TV and Film jobs are listed here. Even some shorts or student films can be listed on this valuable site, so click "UPDATE INFO" at the bottom of your individual page and add credits as instructed. If you can't find the program you are looking for, talk to the producers about getting it listed on IMDB.

As an example, here's my profile... Robin's IMDB Page

What Do You Do Between Auditions?

Do you sit around complaining about not having any work? Or do you send postcards thanking the casting directors who've seen you? I know actors who do both, with varying results. I always think that a positive attitude will bring more work into your life. To help this along, though, why not send postcards? In this brief note, you can thank the casting directors for seeing you and let them know what you're up to in ONE sentence. Don't drone on about things that don't matter, it makes you seem weird :-). Also, be sure your postcards have your picture and representation information on them so they know who sent the note.

On another (semi-related) note, I've been seeing a lot of resumes lately that have personal information on them... Phone number, address, sizes, SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS! Are you serious?! Please Please Please, do not put this on the Internet or on your resumes! If you've ever seen a PROFESSIONAL actor's resume, you'll notice that they do NOT include sizes, height, weight, or any other personal information. They should only have your representation's contact info. If you don't have an agent/manager, then you must put your own cell number and/or email on the resume, but NEVER put your home phone number. As always, just my opinion. :-)

Choices, Choices....

When you're an actor, it can be tough to find a job that helps support your career but also allows you to skip off to auditions at any moment. For many of us, we have a moral issue when confronted with a work-audition conflict. So what do you do when you've got to work, but you've just gotten an audition right in the middle of your shift? This is a tough one. In my opinion, you have to set yourself up with a job in the beginning that will never give you this conundrum (i.e. bartending or waitressing at night, working from home, or just having a great boss who understands....). However, if this is not possible, I say be honest with your employer. Call ahead and let them know that you'll stay later or come in earlier, whatever you need to do to make it up to them. But whatever you do -- GO TO THE AUDITION. You never know when that audition can provide you the resources to leave that crappy job :-).

Myspace/Facebook Part. 2

OMG -- I've gotten so many responses about my posting on 7/21 about myspace and facebook photos. CLEAN UP YOUR PUBLIC WEB PROFILES!!! STOP CURSING/WRITING PERSONAL THINGS ONLINE. AND -- STOP taking NUDE or SEXUALLY EXPLICIT pictures. Too many times, girls have these pictures on their MYSPACE or FACEBOOK pages! Are you serious?! Take these down and destroy them IMMEDIATELY. And don't get me wrong -- this is not a moral judgement. I don't care what you do in your spare time. However, if you want to be taken seriously as an actress, you do not want to represent yourself in swimsuit pictures or pictures of you in tiny outfits bending over. Just my opinion. Casting directors are LOOKING!

2. GET MORE EXPERIENCE before you come to LA. I can't tell you how invaluable this is. Work in theater, local productions, regional commercials, etc. Whatever you can get your hands on before you get here will help. Don't come here blind with no work on your resume.

3. Attend industry "networking" events, but discontinue this if you find that the crowds are full of people just like you who are struggling. That is a waste of your time. You want to be around people who are doing BETTER than you and who are in a position to help. I suggest attending screenings at the DGA (Director's Guild of America), become a "reader" for a famous casting director, or intern for a production company -- to me, these are much better ways to meet important industry folks than paying to attend a mixer.

Hope this helps...
Happy Acting!

Dealing with Rejection

Do you feel rejected after you don't book a job? Especially one you KNOW you're right for? I always feel that the key for actors is to never take rejection personally. In fact, maybe we shouldn't even consider it rejection at all, but rather fate. We've all got a specific path that will lead us to success -- although it is rarely revealed to us! In my opinion, if you do your best work every day and in every audition, you will find peace in your ability to do this consistently. Another helpful hint -- work in a casting office as a reader if you can -- this will help you learn how little what you do in an audition actually has to do with you getting the job. Sometimes it can be as simple as hair color, other actors who you'd be matched with, or who's sleeping with the producer :-). Keep moving and don't look back -- you are only as special as you believe you are!

Audition Remorse

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_SXB7-BZmyxA/SGz57I0czYI/AAAAAAAAAAs/qZE_02mI3Ug/s200/n625196128_1034480_12.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5218820862590635394" />
Do you beat yourself up after your auditions? Asking yourself what you could have done better or why you made certain choices? Most teachers/actors will tell you not to do this, just be happy with your performance as it happened because there's nothing you can do. However, I believe that you should listen to this voice, and evaluate your performance (before and after the camera starts rolling) to learn for next time! Use possibly embarrassing choices or poor performances to grow for next time. Here are a few things I've learned from both the acting and casting sides:

- Don't engage in too much small talk. If the casting director wants to talk to you, than by all means engage them. However, don't use your nervous energy to give out too much information that will only distract from your performance.

- Be prepared. If you went in knowing you didn't spend enough time on the material, make sure NEVER to do that again. Even if you need to ask for more time out in the hallway, do it so that you can do your best.

- NEVER apologize for your headshot, performance, clothing, etc. GET IT RIGHT before you go in!

:-) Book it next time!

Let It Go

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_SXB7-BZmyxA/SGTuASnnKfI/AAAAAAAAAAk/L2JZHCvMRvI/s200/up-close.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5216555957167270386" />
After a big audition, what do you do? Do you evaluate and re-evaluate your performance, or beat yourself up over what you "could" or "should" have done better? Or do you walk away, confident that you did your best? As I grow as an actor, I find myself able to walk away from most auditions with the knowledge that I did the absolute best I could. For me, the thing that is comforting is that the experience was good, I prepared the way I needed to, and I performed what I prepared. You never know what the casting process is like on the other side and how decisions get made. It often has nothing to do with you, and more to do with the needs of the project or the budget or simply luck. Instead of agonizing, enjoy your work and it will always pay off!

The Importance of Staying Busy

Whew! I've been out of "Blog" world for a week because of the hectic schedule of The BET Awards (I was working as a writer) and a reality pilot that I wrote shooting some scenes this week. Not to mention the other dozen or so projects I'm juggling. I say this not to brag, but to stress the importance of staying busy! This last February, I stopped working at E! News as a correspondent and just wasn't sure what would be next. By March, I was off to Louisiana to work on a sketch comedy show with Mike Epps, but that month of no work was brutal. What I learned since that time is that the busier I am, the more work comes my way. This means that even when people aren't knocking on your door or calling you for auditions, you have to keep writing, calling, and networking. Create your own work: write a play, do an improv show, or simply visit theater to get inspired. Keep moving and you will attract work! Or is it all luck?

Knowing When To Say When....

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_SXB7-BZmyxA/SFgaEnvMN_I/AAAAAAAAAAc/5USDXEbkpac/s200/Green-for-Web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5212945235370063858" />
If you've auditioned for a show a number of times (gone to network, tested, etc.) and they are casting again . .... do you audition again or make the producers judge you based on your past performances? We were discussing how both of us have been without theatrical agents (for TV and Film roles) for nearly three years. Yet, despite this, we've both been working more than ever during this time. In a world where agencies are closing left and right and even the largest companies are dumping famous clients, how do middle-class actors compete? I believe the key is to try to find a reputable manager and to also forge relationships with casting directors as much as possible. When you do get a coveted audition, be sure you send a genuine and heartfelt thank you note that is short and includes your picture on a business card with your contact information. Continue to work and write. The right agent is bound to take notice.... at least by the time you book a series. :-)

Keep Moving

This morning, I'm trying to finish a treatment for a pilot. Later today, I have a business lunch about acting/comedy work and then I'll go to work at the BET Awards where I am employed as a writer. All of these efforts are fun and interesting, but am I spreading myself too thin? Some people believe that you must only focus on one area (acting, writing, producing, etc.), while others believe that you have to have a number of irons in the fire to be successful at any one. Work begets work, right? I believe in not living with regret, because every choice that you make leads you exactly where you need to be (good or bad!). Some people, though, believe that regret leads you to make better choices the next time. I firmly believe that without a passion for some element of this creative world, you cannot ultimately succeed. So, if you are passionate and driven, read on.....

1. Don’t say you’re an "aspiring" actor. Embrace your talents and pronounce yourself proudly and simply: an ACTOR.

2. Work in community theatre in your hometown to hone your skills before running off to New York or LA. If you can commit your time to these productions, you will not only learn a lot, but also develop the necessary patience to work in this industry. (For example, for black female actresses who actually "make it," it takes an average of 12 years to become recognizable -- are you ready for this time committment?)

3. Always have a hustle. For me, my writing has been a valuable asset that has kept me from waiting tables but allowed me to audition and act. If you have a corporate gig, it’s going to be much harder.

4. Stay in classes. You must always keep learning and perfecting the craft of acting.

5. NEVER pay for an agent, manager, or other form of representation. Check with SAG and AFTRA for a list of franchised agents and ask around town about the reputable agencies available. An agent takes 10% commission from professional work they get for you and a manager can take 10 or 15%. PERIOD. No money should ever change hands prior to performing and being paid for a job.

6. NETWORK -- get to know all the people you can in the industry and work your way up via professional relationships. Doing extra work can be an interesting way to "get your foot in the door" but don’t do this for more than a few months because the pay is horrible and the hours are unbearable.

7. Stay on top of your game. Sitting around hoping to "get a break" is not productive. Always perform, network, and write to boost your exposure. One-person shows, group shows, and small tv roles help you begin to work your way up.

8. Find a commercial agent. This is a great way for fresh faces to get in the door of Hollywood.

9. Keep you headshots UPDATED (every year at least). They should be high-quality and in color!

10. The industry owes you NOTHING. Work hard and be prepared (if you’re not in a class, you should be reading Adler, Meisner, Stanislovsky, etc.) and when you book something, never say "It’s about time." There are a million people who have been through this biz and never found success, so carve out your own niche and make it happen while maintaining your integrity and modesty.

Most importantly -- if something/someone doesn’t give you a good feeling, WALK AWAY. There are plenty of shady people willing to take advantage of you and your gut will tell you every time.

Hope this helps! Let me know what you think....

XOXO, Robin
